An annual award, in honour of a ‘delightful man’ and respected figure in the property industry, has been handed out for the sixth time.
The Gary Neville Award, created in 2012 by Deeley Group, has been given to Receptionist/Administrator Nora Lowe, who has worked for the company for a decade.
The award is voted for by employees and honours Gary Neville, who joined Deeley Group as an apprentice before progressing to become contracts manager and leading on some of the firm’s major projects including the development of Belgrade Plaza, in Coventry and St George’s Square, in Bristol.
He died suddenly in 2011, and the company introduced the award to recognise the employee who has demonstrated the most commitment to their role within the company over the previous year.
Nora received many glowing recommendations from her colleagues for the award but still says she was ‘absolutely gobsmacked’ to become the sixth member of staff to receive it.
She said: “I have loved every moment of working at Deeley Group so far, the people are incredible and the working environment is great.
“I am still shocked to have won the award but I was absolutely gobsmacked when I found out, it isn’t something I imagined myself winning.
“It is great to win this award, partly because it is flattering as a professional but also because Gary was such a great man.
“We didn’t work too closely together because I was always in the office and Gary would be out and about a lot but we would have a chat over a cup of tea from time to time and he was great to talk to, a delightful man who is still missed.”
Peter Deeley, managing director of Deeley Group, said: “Some of the comments I received from staff include that Nora is always willing to help, she looks after everyone and has a heart of gold.
“Nothing is too much trouble for her and she is always on hand to sort out the small but important things, her work is very much appreciated.
“Gary was a well-known and popular member of the Deeley family, a fantastic member of the team, and I’m sure that he would have agreed that Nora was fully deserving of this year’s award in his remembrance.”
Businesses from across the region gathered to support the construction of a new headquarters for a local community group.
More than 70 people packed into Warwick Hall for the inaugural 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts business breakfast to support the group’s ‘Building a Future’ initiative.
The group needs to raise £650,000 for the construction of a new HQ, as the 50-year-old current hut is in a bad state of repair and too small for the size of group.
A new HQ will also allow the group to grow, supporting more young people and become a valuable resource for the local community. The group has already worked hard to raise £170k and their next phase is to raise a further £200k in 2018.
The morning event, which was supported by Deeley Group and Warwick School, saw business people, civic leaders and politicians attend to hear about the group’s plan for the new headquarters.
Martin Stockbridge, 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts Group Scout Leader, was the first in a packed line-up of speakers – introducing attendees to the Sea Scouts and its fundraising goals.
Highlights of the morning were the talks from current scouts Bethany Ellis and Tom Bosworth, who spoke about the opportunities that Sea Scouting has given them.
The 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts welcomed back two past members too, who shared their memories and explained how being a member had impacted on their later life.
Simon Talling-Smith, CEO of private travel company, Surf Air in Europe and Alan Haywood, CEO of BP Integrated Supply and Trading, were Sea Scouts in the early 1980s and have remained friends for more than 35 years.
Simon Talling-Smith said: “The experience of those years with the Sea Scouts, the resilience and belief it helped us develop were hugely formative.
“I don’t think I would be in the position that I am now if it wasn’t for those years with 2nd Warwick.”
Alan Haywood added: “Being a scout was a defining characteristic in who I was growing up. The group gave me great opportunities. Community is something that is vital for young people and 2nd Warwick gives you that.”
Former Captain of RMS Queen Mary 2, Commodore Bernard Warner, was the final speaker at the breakfast and told stories of his 45 year career at sea.
He highlighted his final voyage in 2011, when at port in Japan he received news of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and was tasked with getting his passengers aboard the Queen Mary 2 home safely.

There was ‘snow’ stopping one of property and construction’s annual Christmas traditions in Coventry.
The Deeley Group, based at George House on Coventry Business Park, invited clients, contacts and colleagues to its festive lunch to celebrate a successful 2017 for the firm.
And, despite snow on the ground and freezing conditions, more than 60 industry professionals joined the team at Deeley to toast the company.
Peter Deeley, managing director of the company, said: “It was another wonderful turn-out for our festive lunch.
“As a company, we value relationships and partnerships and that’s exactly why we hold this event each year. There is no fanfare, no speeches – just a chance to say thank you and Merry Christmas to those people we have worked with during the year.”

An international company based in Warwickshire is doubling the size of its Nuneaton headquarters thanks to recent growth.
Leading health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett International has added a further 48,000 sq ft to its global headquarters at Eliot Park, which is the hub for over 1,500 stores globally.
Coventry-based Deeley Construction, which took the project through the initial design and planning process, has now completed the multi-million pound development and handed over the state-of-the-art building to the company.
Not only are staff now making the most of the extended office space, they are also benefitting from an on-site gym and nursery. The latest works will see the HQ house 500 staff when all positions have been filled.
It’s the latest phase of work that Deeley Group has undertaken at the park in Nuneaton after more than 40 years of regeneration on the site.
Peter Aldis, Chief Executive Officer of Holland & Barrett International, said: “We moved to Eliot Park in 2010 and it has been a great base from which to grow the company.
“We are delighted that we have been able to expand on site to meet our plans to grow the business and we are very pleased with the work Deeley Construction has undertaken.

A Coventry company has joined forces with Coventry Road Club to stage a charity cycle ride and celebrate two of cycling’s greatest innovators.
The Starley Sportive will recognise the contributions of James Starley and John Kemp Starley to the modern bicycle industry and take on place on Sunday, 18 February, 2018.
Deeley Group have joined up with Coventry Road Club to hold the event, marking Coventry Road Club’s sixth sportive and following on from the successful Deeley 80 Cycle Ride in September 2016.
All money raised on the day with be donated to support Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice.
James Starley is known as the father of the bicycle industry, while John Kemp Starley is widely considered the inventor of the modern bicycle – both worked and lived in Coventry.
The day will feature a choice of two routes to ride from Coventry into the Warwickshire Countryside, with one route 59 miles and the other 30 miles.
The sportive will leave from Deeley Group’s headquarters in Coventry at 9am.
Ian Court, of the Coventry Road Club, said: “The Starley Sportive is the perfect opportunity to kick-start your road season in 2018.
“We wanted to recognise the incredible contribution of James and John Kemp Starley, both of whom were of course based in Coventry, and raise funds for a very worthwhile cause in Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice.
“We’re excited to be working with Deeley Group to put on the sportive and have already received a lot of interest for what should be a brilliant day of cycling.”

One of the country’s three Chapel Royal choirs will perform a special festive concert to raise funds for a Warwickshire charity.
The Gentlemen from the Choir of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal Hampton Court Palace, will be performing a Christmas Charity Concert in aid of Rufus’ Friends’ Fund.
Around 350 people are expected to attend the concert which will be taking place at St Mary’s Church in Warwick on Saturday, December 2. The concert is sponsored by The Deeley Group and has almost sold out.
Rufus’ Friends’ Fund, which was founded in 1989, provides day-activities, breaks and holidays for families, local to Warwickshire, which have a member with learning difficulties giving families respite and a chance to recharge, with grants averaging from £250 to £350 per application.
A drinks reception will open the event from 6pm to 7pm, before the choir’s performance from 7pm to 8:15pm.
The choir recently featured on Lucy Worsley’s BBC Four show; it consists of six Gentlemen, made up of two altos, two tenors and two basses.
Edward Button is one of the six Gentlemen who will be performing on the evening and is also a trustee of Rufus’ Friends’ Fund.
He said: “I was appointed to the Chapel Royal in April and I have been looking forward to this concert for a while now, especially as it is in aid of Rufus’ Friends’ Fund.
“I believe Rufus’ Friends’ Fund is a great cause, as they do fantastic work in helping to support families, who have a member with a learning disability and need a break from the pressure of their day-to-day lives.
“We will be singing a five-part programme and it will of course have a Christmas focus throughout.
“We have had a brilliant response in terms of ticket sales and we’re expecting the concert to be a complete sell out.”
