Builders working on the Belgrade Plaza site have hung up their boots in aid of charity and will be rubbing heels with fame along the way.

Deeley Construction has donated 50 pairs of builders’ boots to the Coventry Shoe Appeal alongside shoes worn by celebrities including Rachel Stevens, Jodie Kidd, Ricky Tomlinson and Barbara Windsor.

Coventry hosted this year’s national Holocaust Memorial Day and as part of the events to mark the occasion, the City Council urged people to donate a pair of shoes to be used in a work of public art.

All of the shoes donated to the appeal, including the builders’ muddy boots, will be given to Oxfam now the sculpture has been unveiled and sold to help people living in third world countries.

Gary Neville, of Deeley Construction, said: “The builders had left their boots in the site drying room and were told to take them home or we’d donate them to charity.

“When we checked to see if anyone had collected their boots, there were still plenty of pairs left so we kept to our word and off they went to the shoe appeal!

“I don’t think the builders can quite believe that their muddy boots are now in a collection of shoes worn by celebrities!”

Belgrade Plaza is a £140 million mixed use scheme which will include hotels, restaurants, bars, a casino and apartments as well as a new public square, and is expected to be complete by 2010.
