This striking building is on the main arterial road into the centre of Southampton and forms an imposing landmark for visitors to the city. The project comprised a 4 storey office block with associated car parking and cycle storage on the site of a former BP petrol filling station.
A joint venture company Dorset Street Partnership was formed in partnership with Deeley Properties, to develop the site. Deeley Construction were subsequently appointed as design and build contractors on the project.
Upper floors of smooth finish cream clay brick sat on a ground floor height plinth of charcoal terracotta rain screen cladding. This finish was carried up either side of the main entrance glazing.
A projecting glass feature highlighted the main entrance and atrium and this was decorated with a floral artwork to the ground, first and second floors.
The fourth floor was finished with dark grey ppc curtain walling. External feature terrace areas were formed to the third and fourth floors.
The architectural form was reminiscent of a ship with walls set back at both third and fourth floor levels. The handrails on the balconies reflected the rails on the prow of a ship.
The building was designed and constructed to achieve a ‘Good’ rating under the BREEAM standards.
