An award-winning Midlands construction and development group has strengthened its board with two appointments.
Steve Turner and Steve Jones – who both work for the construction division of the Coventry-based Deeley Group – have been appointed to the main group board of directors.
Turner joined the company 29 years ago as a trainee surveyor straight from school and has progressed through the ranks to become Construction Director.
Jones, who joined the Deeley Group in 2010 from Chase Norton, is currently Estimating Director.
Peter Deeley, managing director of the Deeley Group, said the appointments reflected the importance of construction in the overall business, as well as the achievements of the two members of staff.
“Construction is a major component of the Deeley Group offer and we only see that expanding in the months and years to come, so it is important that plays a major part in the future growth of the group,” he said.
“It also proves that we are a company that likes to foster, develop and promote our internal talent. Steve Turner, for example, joined as a Junior Trainee Surveyor and completed a construction degree at DeMontfort University Leicester through day release. He has won promotions and became our Construction Director in 2010.
“The two appointments reflect the commitment and talent the two Steves have consistently shown in their time at the Deeley Group.”
The Deeley Group was established in 1936 and specialises in construction, property development and home building and development in the private and affordable homes markets.

Deeley Properties’ investment portfolio continues to see great success.
Deeley Properties acquired a 20,000 sq. ft. industrial warehouse on an established estate in Dudley in 2016. The property was then let to ERIKS with two years remaining on its lease.
Deeley identified the opportunity to refurbish and re-let or sell the building, whilst receiving a return on cost of 8.5% until the end of the lease.
Earlier this year the property on Crackley Way was sold to Pipework Engineering Services securing a significant return for the company.
The investment at Harwell Science & Technology Campus in Oxfordshire continues to show a good return. Nuva is the current tenant at the property and Andrew Brazier, development consultant, secured an increase of over 30% in rent.
Andrew said: “The property at Harwell remains part of our core portfolio as an investment in a growing science park and we hope that following this increase we shall be negotiating a new longer lease in exchange for some improvement works to the property.”
Two former trainees at Deeley Construction have taken the next step in their development with the company.
Matt Lynch and Chris Newman joined the firm on the trainee programme and have now been promoted to commercial manager and contracts manager respectively.
Matt, who joined the company in 2006, has been promoted from senior quantity surveyor and is set to continue his 13 years association with the firm.
He started his career as a management trainee and commercial manager will be the fourth position he has held at the company, after rising through the ranks.
Matt said: “I’m looking forward to helping the firm to improve its commercial offering and to continue my own development in that department.
“I’ve worked on key projects including Holland & Barrett, Union Park and I’m currently working on a Balfour Beatty Homes project.
“Deeley Construction is a great company to work for and I’m looking forward to meeting the challenge of my new role.”
Chris has been with the Deeley Group for six years and has now progressed from site manager to contracts manager.
He has been fast-tracked after proving his ability in each position held since joining as a trainee site manager in 2013.
By 2016, he was already running his own site and will now be contract manager at Plot 1300 on Tachbrook Park in Warwick.
He said: “I began my career at Deeley Construction working on Queensway Court and believe I have continued to progress on each project I’ve worked on.
“It is great to have reached the level I have in such quick time and I am grateful for the tutelage received so far.”
Martin Gallagher, managing director of Deeley Construction, added: “As a company we are committed to the development of our staff and it is fantastic to see how far Matt and Chris have come since joining us as trainees.

A Stratford-upon-Avon retail park has undergone a significant renovation including the opening of a new supermarket.
Deeley Construction has completed work on a major refurbishment and extension project to create new retail facilities at Maybrook Retail Park.
The project is valued at £3.4 million and saw the Coventry-based firm win two separate tenders to carry out the development.
Work began on the £2.4 million extension to Unit 1 of the existing retail development in June 2018, on behalf of BMW (UK) Trustees Limited.
It was completed in February and incorporated over-cladding of the large steel frame unit, new shop frontages and entrances to Unit 2 and 3.
The extension saw the creation of a new Lidl at the retail park. Deeley Construction then tendered directly to the supermarket giant to secure the £1 million completion of the fit-out of the 21,965 sq. ft. unit.
The on-site car park was also resurfaced and reconfigured, with spaces increasing from 146 to 155.

“Our team carried out the work quickly and on time, showing great respect for customers at the thriving retail park by causing minimal disruption.

An apartment scheme for the elderly in Coventry city centre has taken a major step forward with the laying of its foundation stone.
Cllr Linda Bigham, Lord Mayor of Coventry, was on hand to lay the stone at Bonds Lodge near Belgrade Plaza.
The £6.8 million development is being completed by Deeley Construction in partnership with Coventry Church (Municipal) Charities, with the scheme designed by Nicol Thomas Architects.
It will see 45 self-contained apartments built within the three-storey building and is expected to be completed by Spring 2020.
They will be the newest addition to the Almshouses, run by Coventry Church (Municipal) Charities as sheltered housing schemes for the elderly, which were founded in the early 1500s.
Cllr Bigham said: “It was wonderful to be invited. This fits in so well with my own personal charities, one of which is Age Concern Coventry and Warwickshire. I’ve also been newly appointed to Coventry Church (Municipal) Charities.
“I highly commend CCMC putting their efforts into providing new facilities for the elderly and it is fantastic that a local and well-respected company such as Deeley Construction is delivering the project.”
Victor Keene MBE, chairman of Coventry Church (Municipal) Charities, added: “This marks a key stage in the development of the Almshouses and we’re looking forward to them being completed in the spring of next year.
“It’s an exciting point and we’re thrilled that the Lord Mayor joined us for the occasion to lay the stone, which she did very graciously.”
It marks the Deeley Construction’s first project awarded from Homes England’s DPP3 Framework.

Work is underway on 30,000 sq ft of new business, production and warehousing units in Warwick.
AC Lloyd has appointed Deeley Construction to complete the £6 million development which will see 15 new units created off Plato Close in Tachbrook Park.
Completion is expected in December 2019 and over half of the units have already been sold – with planning permission secured from Warwick District Council earlier this year.
The units are available for purchase or rent and cater for a wide range of industries including hi-tech, engineering and storage. It could attract 80 new jobs to the region.
AC Lloyd, which is also based at Tachbrook Park, has owned the 132-acre site since the 1980s.
The development and investment company has previously worked with Deeley Construction on a similar successful project, a £9 million development at Kites Park in Princes Risborough.
Mark Edwards, managing director at AC Lloyd Commercial, said: “We are delighted to be working with a local company again in Deeley Construction to deliver this much-needed commercial development in Warwick.
“Work is starting on-site in difficult times but despite those wider economic circumstances, there is still a clear demand for units such as this in the region.
“Over half of the space had already been sold before we began construction and we have had significant interest in the remaining units.
“It is the next stage in the expansion of Tachbrook Park as more and more businesses are attracted to a hugely successful development.”

Almost 10 years ago David Cameron launched his concept of the Big Society which was designed to “to generate, develop and showcase new ideas to help people to come together in their neighbourhoods to do good things”.
Like many new ideas it was, of course, not original but looked to build on a tradition of communities helping each other out. It came in for a degree of derision and did not stand the test of time as a packaged policy initiative.
We have recently been involved in the refurbishment of the offices of the Coventry & District Samaritans – and to me it has summed up just what Cameron and his advisors were trying to capture.
The Samaritans is operated entirely by volunteers and at the centre they take 33,000 calls a year across 365 days, 24 hours a day.
When they came to see me back in February 2017 they were well underway with fund raising to improve their base in Earlsdon which, to be frank, was not a suitable environment for the work they were undertaking and the services they were offering.
We agreed to help and now two years later they have moved back in to a bright, modern, and wholly suitable base.
Deeley Construction has been involved, but the response from the business community has been superb. More than 10 companies have given their time at cost or for free and all of them were happy to help because they recognised not only the importance of the work the Samaritans does, but also the unbelievable commitment of those who work on their behalf often dealing with testing and distressing matters.
In an age with loneliness, anxiety and mental issues are making the headlines every day, their work has never been more important.
None of the companies involved were in it for the publicity or the glory, more that they have a sense of responsibility to their community and they realise the importance of that in a properly-functioning society in which every member matters.
So, several years after the government allowed their Big Society to wither on the vine in wake of the criticism it received, the concept is alive and well, and thriving in Coventry and, I believe, right across the UK.
Please bear that in mind when you see a Samaritans volunteer out on the street raising money.

Work started on site in 2016 and took two years to complete with all apartments now fully let. The development was brought to market through a partnership between Stratford Town Trust, Orbit, ABD Developments and Robothams Architects, with Deeley Construction as design and build contractors. Fordham House is owned and managed by Orbit, with Stratford Town Trust continuing to retain the freehold.
