The Deeley Group is to raise and distribute money for local good causes as part of a new charity initiative
The construction and property development firm which has been based in the city for more than 80 years – has established a charity which will see its 70 employees raise money throughout the year.
Any monies raised will be distributed to charities and good causes, nominated by employees, across the city and county with the focus on smaller organisations.
As well as collecting money raised by staff, The Deeley Group Charity will also organise standalone events to go into the charity pot.
Ian Clorley, a trustee of the Deeley Group Charity, said: “The Deeley Group has been renowned for its support of local charities, but this is a way in which all staff can get involved.
“It means that not only will they get to play a full part in the fund raising but we will also be asking for suggestions of charities and good causes we can work for and raise money for.
“We have already had some really good suggestions and are now getting to plan what we will be doing in 2019.”
Group managing director Peter Deeley, whose father started the firm, said the initiative had been driven by staff.
He said: “Although we operate across the UK, our heart is very much here in Coventry and Warwickshire, and we are very much a part of the local community.
“Over the years we have helped many local causes, and the formation of our own charity will allow that continue and give our team and chance to shape how much we raise and where the funds go to.”
Lillington Free Church has been officially opened by the town’s mayor following the demolition of the previous building to make way for a new purpose-built church building and 25 affordable homes to meet the needs of the local community.
Councillor Heather Calver, the Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa was joined by over 130 people from the local community alongside representatives from Orbit for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and open day event.
Commenting on the success of the event, she said: “I was delighted to be involved in the ceremony to open the new church. The design and build is truly beautiful, and it provides a real asset to our community”.
Reverend James Church, said: “The success of this development is down to the great partnership working with Orbit and its contractors Deeley Construction. We were involved from the initial planning stages to ensure what we have created is exactly what the local community needs and wants.
“It was amazing to welcome so many people to the official opening and hear how impressed they are!”
Dan Barnes, Land and New Business Director at Orbit, said: “We are delighted with the positive reaction towards the new building from church members and the local community. It was great to see so many people come along for the opening event and to see all of the amazing clubs and activities that bring people from within the wider community together.”
The development also includes 25 new affordable homes comprising of 7 three-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom houses as well as 3 two-bedroom and 3 one-bedroom flats, all available for shared ownership, due to be completed by the end of the year.
Bob Hodgkiss, Site Manager at Deeley Construction, added: “We are very pleased to have completed this project in partnership with Orbit and Lillington Free church.
“The new development will be an important resource for the community, providing a new space for events and creating vital new homes for the area.”
Orbit has invested over £4 million into the development including £625,000 of funding granted by Homes England.
Around 500 cyclists achieved a hat-trick of aims as the city’s Starley Sportive helped raise around £13,000 for charity.
The sportive – named after the Coventry men who invented the modern bicycle – was one of the first mass participation events celebrating the city’s 12 months as European City of Sport.
Riders, who set off from the headquarters of Coventry firm Deeley Group on Coventry Business Park took on one of three courses – a 28.6 mile route, a 63.2 mile long-distance ride, or an epic 86.5 mile challenge – in the event’s biggest ever field.
This year riders who took part in the event, which was organised Coventry Road Club, and supported by property company Deeley Group, raised money for a wide range of charities but Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice was the official charity for the day.
Ian Court, Race Secretary at Coventry Road Club, said the event had been a real celebration of the reasons why Coventry was European City of Sport.
“This was a mass participation event in every sense. We had some very good riders who did the longest course, while others just wanted to on a bike to help a good cause,” he said.
“It allowed riders to blow away those winter cobwebs, raise money for charity and also celebrated will be a memorable year for the city.”
This year’s event had been expanded to 500 and there was a waiting list, while some commemorative kit which was produced for the club had sold out.
Edward Hudson, Business Development Manager at the Deeley Group, said: “The day could not have gone better. The weather was really kind to the riders, we had great help from a huge number of volunteers and everyone came back with smiles on their faces and gave great feedback from the event.
“This year is also Coventry’s Year of Wellbeing, and the event underlined just how important exercise is in helping people say fit physically and mentally.
“There was a real energy on the day and very much a sense of collective achievement.”
The race was stared by Lord Mayor Councillor John Blundell and BBC Coventry and Warwickshire’s Vic Minnett.
Coventry City Councillor Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member Public Health and Sport, was also there to see the riders on their way.
He said: “Cycling has so many benefits from a physical and mental point of view, and obviously it is a very green form of transport. The Starley Sportive is a great event and I was delighted that it sold out in our year as City of Sport. It really was inspiring to see so many people making such an effort for so many good causes.”
WCS Care’s new £7.5 million care home in Warwick is a step closer to completion after passing a major construction milestone.
The roof of Woodside Care Village on Spinney Hill is now complete and internal work has recently started at the deluxe village-style experience for 72 residents including older people and people with dementia, which will open in Autumn 2019.
It will feature family-scale households for six or seven people with ensuite bedrooms for everyone, as well as a spa, salon, cinema, and café plus table tennis and a side-by-side bike-for-two, complete with a cycle track – all designed to ensure the people who live there enjoy life as much as possible.
The state-of-the-art home has been designed for Warwickshire-based charity WCS Care by local architects Robothams and will encourage people to spend more time outdoors, which has benefits to health and wellbeing.
External walkways will replace internal corridors and an open-air courtyard will provide easy access to features including a shop and traditional launderette.
Built by Coventry-based Deeley Construction, Woodside Care Village will feature the latest technology that will enhance and integrate into daily life without being intrusive.
Smart phone apps connected to mobile care monitoring will mean carers spend more time with residents. It’s linked to a Relative’s Gateway, where people can check and interact with their loved ones’ care 24-hours a day, wherever they are with an internet connection.
A ‘topping-out’ ceremony was held this week (Tuesday 26 February 2019) to mark the three-story home reaching its highest point.

A Leamington development has been recognised with a double nomination at a prestigious industry awards.
Union Park has been shortlisted in the Regeneration and Residential categories at the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards 2019 for the West Midlands.
The £29 million development comprises of 147 affordable homes on the former Soans’ motor dealership site in Sydenham – developed by Deeley Group on behalf of Orbit Homes.
The shortlist recognises the 25 of the region’s most innovative and community beneficial property projects – with the winners to be announced at the awards ceremony at Birmingham Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, May 8.
Regional winners will then go on to the RICS Awards Grand Final in November, as the overall UK winner in each category is decided.
All regional winners go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final in November 2019, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
Stratford-upon-Avon’s Fordham House – also built by Deeley – has also been nominated in the Residential category.
The project comprises 82 high-quality apartments and was developed by Orbit Homes in partnership with Deeley Construction and ABD Developments.

Work is underway on a new look home for the Coventry branch of Samaritans in Earlsdon.
The charity’s shop and call centre is undergoing major repair and renovation to improve the facility for its volunteers.
The renovations will see a complete refurbishment of the facility, including improved access for disabled volunteers, more storage for the shop and enhanced acoustics to assist in secure, sensitive conversations.
Deeley Construction is carrying out the works at the building on Moor Street, which is Earlsdon’s oldest shop and first opened in the 1860s as a provisions merchant.
The construction company has brought in architects IDP to manage the project on behalf of the Samaritans, and worked to establish a relationship with the 29th May Charitable Trust to provide grant support.
Other contractors assisting on the project include Umberslade Demolition, Claddagh Electrical, CDE Contractors, Naughton Interiors, D B Heating & Plumbing, Nationwide Windows, Midlands Flooring, Cladding Components, Midlands Floor Screeding and G&M Carpentry.
Coventry & District Samaritans were contacted more than 33,000 times in 2017 and are open 138 hours a week – assisted by its 120 strong group of volunteers.
The shop, which can raise up to £500 per week for the charity, is expected to re-open in April but the charity is still maintaining a full call service from a temporary base at Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind.
Mike Ballinger, project manager at the Coventry & District Samaritans, said: “Our volunteers are invaluable to us and without them we wouldn’t be able to provide the service we do.
“We wanted to make life easier for them and these renovations will help to do that, particularly by improving accessibility.
“The stairs inside are quite steep, and some of our volunteers find difficulty going up and down them at the moment. We will be lowering the stairs and also improving side access for volunteers in wheelchairs.
“The shop itself will be renovated too. Our shop volunteers are vital and with their fundraising allow the charity to focus on its core purpose of helping people by phone, text and e-mail.
“Deeley Construction have been very helpful in the process. It is a very professional organisation and it’s great to know that our building is in safe hands.
“We hope these changes will encourage more volunteers to join us in Coventry.”

The 2nd Wallingford Scout Group has received a boost from Deeley Construction to help with future fundraising activities.
Deeley Construction has donated a barbecue, new sign and arranged for a free skip to help the scout group’s clear out of its storage hut.
The Coventry company has recently built the new Lidl store in the town which will open at the end of January.
2nd Wallingford Scout Group has more than 120 members – boys and girls – across Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who are supported by more that 30 Leaders, Young Leaders and Trustees.
The new sign has now been placed on the front of the group’s main scout hut, while the donated barbecue will be the centrepiece of fundraising events throughout the year.
Helen Liddar, Group Scout Leader of the 2nd Wallingford Scout Group, said: “It was a completely unexpected donation and we would like to thank everyone at the Deeley Group for the very generous gifts.
“The skip was actually really vital for us. We have two huts, but one is primarily used for storage. Having the skip available helped us to clear-out and re-organise our storage areas which helps support our amazing adult leaders to deliver camps and other fun activities for our young people.
“Our Scouts and Leaders regularly organise fundraisers to support their trips, expeditions and adventures. The new barbecue will support a wide range of fundraising events, as scouts look to raise crucial funds to support their adventures.”
The free skip was supplied by Aylesbury-based waste management service business Bucks Recycling.
Tricia Murray, Managing Director at Bucks Recycling, said: “Bucks Recycling has provided a waste management service for the Deeley Group for many years so when they asked for our help, we were very happy to donate.
“Our Operations Manager is a Scout Leader and devotes much of his spare time to taking scouts on field trips and great learning adventures.
“He believes that being a Scout teaches life skills and develops confidence in a way that schools are not equipped to do due to the constraints of the national curriculum.
“We are proud to be able to assist with this admirable project which will open opportunities to young boys and girls for learning and fun in a safe environment.”
Edward Hudson, Business Development Manager at Deeley Construction, added: “The scout group is only a 10 minute walk from the new Lidl store and is an important project in the local community.
“We hope that this donation will allow the scout group to continue to grow and support the development of young people in Wallingford, continuing to be a key part of their lives.”
A Coventry construction worker has been honoured with an annual award in his last act before retirement.
The Gary Neville Award was created in 2012 in tribute to the former Deeley Group contracts manager and is voted for by employees of the company.
Site operative Billy Griffith has become the seventh recipient of the Gary Neville Award in his final year working for the Deeley Group.
Billy said: “This is certainly a great way to sign off my 35 year association with the Deeley Group and I’m very honoured to have received this award.
“I have had the pleasure of working alongside a lot of great people during my time with the firm and to know that your colleagues voted for you makes it all the more special.
“Gary was a well-respected colleague who I worked with for many years and this award is fitting tribute to him and his legacy.
“I would like to thank everyone at the Deeley Group and wish everyone the best for the future.”
The award honours Gary Neville, who joined the company as an apprentice and went on to lead some of the firm’s major projects, including the development of Belgrade Plaza.
Gary passed away in 2011 and the awarded is presented to the employee who has displayed the most commitment to their role over the past year.

“Over the past seven years everyone at the company has embraced the award, as each year we remember Gary and the vibrant, popular man that he was.
“During his time working for the firm, Billy has carried himself with great integrity and built a respect amongst his colleagues.
“His strengths were his multi-disciplinary skillset gave him the ability to complete any task asked of him, but more importantly he was reliable.
“We would like to thank Billy for his years of valued service at the Deeley Group and he is a very deserving recipient of this year’s award.”
