The wheels are rolling on the creation of the new £5.5 million bus depot for mid and south Warwickshire.
Warwick-based developer AC Lloyd and project managers Minns Network are creating a new depot and engineering hub for Stagecoach at Trident Park, in Warwick, as part of a major redevelopment plan in the district.
The company is currently based at Station Approach near the town centre of Leamington but is relocating from this site as part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the land for housing, the majority of which will be available for rent or shared ownership through Waterloo Housing Association.
Work on the depot will be completed in April 2017 and it will include six mechanical maintenance pits, two areas to allow buses to be elevated for repair and inspection, an engineering office, a bus wash and parking for more than 75 vehicles.
Des Wynne, of AC Lloyd, said the new development would be a double improvement for the region.
“Station Approach will see the creation of much-needed affordable homes in a really convenient location close to the railway station and in turn has given Stagecoach the opportunity to create a state-of-the- art depot in Trident Park from where they will run their local operations,” he said.
“This will mark the completion of the Trident Park Development following the recent development of a new teaching facility for Warwickshire College, and the Trident Business Centre, both of which were successfully completed last year.”
He said: “It is also a very good news story for local businesses. Deeley Construction, who are based in Coventry and have worked extensively in the Leamington area, have won the depot construction contract.
“The two companies worked together recently on the College building and the contract went extremely well. The legal work was undertaken by Wright Hassall who are a stone’s throw from the site while the two agents – Bromwich Hardy and Avison Young – are also both local which really does underline the strength of the professional sector in this area.”
Stagecoach will have 165 people working out of the new depot, with buses and coaches operating from there across the area and into Coventry.
Steve Burd, Managing Director for Stagecoach Midlands, added: “”Bus services operated from the depot will cover South Warwickshire and run as far as Coventry in the North , Stratford in the South, Evesham in the West and Southam in the East .Our initial fleet will consist of 27 double decks , 26 single decks and 14 Gold standard minibuses.
“The move will allow us to significantly improve our engineering capability on site and provide our staff with the best modern facilities in which to work.”

Two construction property professionals have gone back to put their theory into practice on a major scheme at Coventry University
Clayton Jones and Chris Newman, who both work for city-based Deeley Construction, have just been awarded first class degrees in Construction Management at Coventry University.
Now they are back at their former place of learning, to review the £500,000 project that Deeley Construction are undertaking to help transform the Alan Berry Building.
The project, which is taking four months to complete, will transform the main entrance of the building on University Square.
Twentry-nine year old Chris, a former pupil of Cardinal Newman School and twenty-three year old Clayton, a former pupil at Finham Park School, have been with Deeley Construction for three and five years respectively. Clayton, who is acting as Quantity Surveyor on the project, commented:
“Chris and I have done our training under the senior professionals at Deeley working on sites and projects while continuing our studies towards our degrees.
“We heard the news that we had both got a first while the project to transform the Alan Berry Building was taking place, which was very fitting.
“It is pleasing to be working on a project which is making a difference to such a key building in the city and at the university – and hopefully my former tutors believe I have done a good job!”
The building had to remain open and fully functional during the project, a traffic light system was installed to tell people using the building that noisy works were planned, and an open day was held during the construction period which required strict management.
Peter Deeley, of Deeley Construction, said: “While we work across the UK, we are very much a Coventry company at heart so to see two local lads train with us and then complete their degrees at Coventry University is really rewarding.
“Construction needs a significant number of young people to join the industry to help with the demand to build in this country. By taking on trainees, we are able to give them hands-on experience whilst learning at college or university.
“We have undertaken several projects for the university in recent years and this particular scheme will make a massive difference to the look of what many people regard as the “front door” to the university.
“The university has – along with the local authority – really driven development and the quality of buildings in recent years and it has made a massive difference to the city in terms of its look and image.”
Deeley Construction is part of the Deeley Group which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. It is celebrating the landmark year with an 80 mile cycle ride which will raise money for the Heart of England Community Foundation which distributes funds to local community projects.
‘The Deeley 80’ is being held in aid of grant giving organisation the Heart of England Community Foundation, based in Coventry, which gives funding to groups and organisations who make a lasting difference in their area.
Cyclists from Deeley’s clients and partners, will travel from the Deeley head office in Coventry, through the Warwickshire countryside and then return to the city on Sunday, September 11.
All of the money raised will be matched by the Deeley Group before being donated to the Foundation.
To celebrate the charity ride, the company welcomed a piece of the city’s cycling history to its headquarters – a 1936 Coventry Eagle triple ace convertible tandem – thanks to Coventry Transport Museum and its curator of cycles and transport objects Megan Nass.
The 80-year-old bicycle, built the very same year the Deeley Group was founded, is one of only six ever made and one of just three still in existence.

Deeley Construction is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a string of industry award wins and nominations.
The company, which was formed in 1936, is holding a series of events throughout the year to commemorate the milestone.
And Deeley Construction has also been recognised at two major awards ceremonies already this year for work it has undertaken across the Midlands region.
The firm landed a Silver Award at the Consider Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards in Manchester for its work in creating a new B&M Store at Coventry Airport Retail Park.
At the same ceremony, Deeley Construction was presented with the Bronze Award for the Technology Centre at the MIRA Technology Park.
The company’s outstanding new teaching facility at Pershore College, which is part of Warwickshire College Group, was shortlisted in two categories at the West Midlands Celebrating Construction Awards – Project of the Year and Integration & Collaboration.

The foundations for 82 apartments at Fordham House, a new development in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, have begun to be laid down.
In a prime location on the corner of Birmingham Road and Clopton Road, initial works at the site began earlier this year with the demolition a vacant office building, after Orbit took over the lease from the Stratford Town Trust in January.
To mark the start of construction of the new homes, Orbit and Stratford Town Trust were recently joined on site by partners Deeley Construction and ABD Developments to celebrate the laying of the first brick.
Due for completion in summer 2017, Fordham House will offer a mix of high-quality one and two bedroom apartments for private rent.
With close proximity to the hospital and town centre, initial preference for the 82 apartments will be given to local key workers, such as health and emergency service workers and teachers, as well as local people.
The development is being brought to market through a partnership between Stratford Town Trust, Orbit, ABD Developments and Robothams Architects, with Deeley Construction as design and build contractors. Once complete, Fordham House will be owned and managed by Orbit, with Stratford Town Trust continuing to retain the freehold.

A £5 million deal has been agreed to build 143 affordable homes on the former Soans Garage premises in south east Leamington Spa.
The seven-acre site next to the Grand Union canal and Sydenham Drive has been sold by Wareing & Company’s client CHS Properties to a joint venture between Orbit Housing and Deeley Properties, following delayed planning consent from Warwick District Council.
Pat Moroney, of Deeley Properties: “We are very pleased this is progressing so well. We gained permission on appeal and are delighted that the deal means that work can start.
“This will bring much needed affordable homes to Leamington, and we expect the development to be as successful as our scheme with Orbit at Queensway in Leamington.”

Work has started to extend Holland & Barrett International’s global headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
The company is one of the world’s leading health and wellness retailers and the largest in Europe, supplying its customers with a wide range of vitamins, minerals, health supplements, specialist foods and natural beauty products. The Nuneaton-based business moved to Eliot Park in the town in 2010 and now employs more than 300 staff at its head office.
But as the retailer has expanded rapidly, the headquarters too are in need of development, and Coventry-based Deeley Construction is in the process of building a 48,000 sq. ft. extension which will allow staff numbers to grow to between 500 and 600, solidifying Holland & Barrett International as one of the largest employers in the area.
Holland & Barrett International has almost 1,100 stores in 11 different countries including Kuwait, Malta, Singapore and China, and has been assisted in its overseas growth by the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) team at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Holland & Barrett International’s success in global expansion was recognised this year with a Queen’s Award for International Trade, one of the highest honours for business presented to the company in April.
Work on the extension follows on from the creation of a new car park on site at Eliot Park, part of a 40-year regeneration on the site, undertaken by the Deeley Group, and is expected to be completed in early 2017.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick has been given the lowdown on a major £2.8 million extension to Warwick Medical School.
Professor Stuart Croft was given a tour of the extension of the Mechanochemical Cell Biology Building (MCBB), which was built by Coventry-based company Deeley Construction.
Work started on site around a year ago and the project was delivered on-time and on-budget in March.
The purpose of the additional space is to provide a new high-quality laboratory in line with the Biomedical Cell Biology Division’s need to accommodate more researchers into the building.
The new building has been designed to withstand particular environments such as heating and cooling in order to carry out research into diseases such as cancer.
Professor Croft said: “The new building is an example of the University’s and Warwick Medical School’s commitment to world-class research, training and innovation. MCBB is a first class facility which provides a home for researchers who are investigating solutions to significant global health challenges.”
He was joined on the tour by Pro-Dean (Research) Prof. Mohan Balasubramanian; Dean of Warwick Medical School Prof. Sudhesh Kumar; Prof. Jonathan Millar, Head of Division; and Deeley Construction managing director Martin Gallagher.
Martin said: “We have a great working partnership with the University of Warwick and we are delighted with the finished extension.
“The team had to work in a live environment with the existing MCBB building in full use throughout the project.
“That presented its own challenges but we made sure that we kept any disruption to an absolute minimum.
“We have worked on a really varied selection of projects and they are a very small part of the construction underway on campus, but as a local firm it is great to play a part in the development of the University.”
