There was a double celebration at Kingsmere, Countryside Properties (Bicester) Limited’s development in Bicester on Friday 18th May as MP, Victoria Prentis handed over the keys to the newly built Community and Youth Centre buildings at Kingsmere Village Centre, to Cherwell District Council.
At the same event, children from St Edburg’s Primary School unveiled two beautiful new public artworks created for the village centre.
Victoria Prentis was on hand last October to mark the start on site of the community centre and youth centre buildings and laid the first brick. It was fitting that she returned to Kingsmere to formally hand over the keys of the buildings on behalf of the developer, Countryside Properties (Bicester) Ltd to the leader of the Cherwell District Council, Councillor Barry Wood.
Victoria commented: “The Community and Youth Centres are important additions to Kingsmere, providing places for residents of all ages to meet, socialise and get to know one another. I have watched with great interest as this development has grown and enjoyed being involved in its progress. North Oxfordshire has several development sites under construction and I look forward to watching them grow in the same way.”
The residents group that has come together to manage these terrific new community facilities were also on hand to mark the occasion and to enjoy a tour of the buildings.”
Councillor Wood said: “I feel confident that these new facilities will serve as a heart to Kingsmere. I know that the Kingsmere Community Centre group have great plans for a range of clubs, activities and events here once fully open. I believe it will provide a popular place for people to come together, meet new friends and neighbours and strengthen the community spirit that will ensure Kingsmere thrives in Bicester.”

Renowned public artist, Suzanne Driscoll, has created two striking pieces of art for Kingsmere. The much-anticipated installations, commissioned by Countryside Properties (Bicester) Ltd, with the support of Cherwell District Council’s arts team, are both situated within the village centre, in the heart of Kingsmere, and provide eye catching landmarks in the village. Suzanne worked closely with the pupils of St Edburg’s Primary School to come up with the creative themes for her artwork.
Suzanne Driscoll comments: “From the start I wanted to create visual treats; artwork that people could step into, walk through and look at from below or from the sides. With these thoughts in mind my design for the pieces gradually immerged. Though tall in stature and made from modern materials, the structures have an intimate feel. The larger piece is positioned as a focal point at the centre of a circular seating area and will act as a meeting place, a relaxing area or a zone for contemplation. It features imagery of the plants that grew on the former farmland at Kingsmere. These wonderfully intertwined designs embrace Kingsmere’s roots and history for the community.
The second piece of artwork is designed to act as a beacon, leading people into the centre. It stands where the pathway leaves the road, providing a visual feature for the entrance. This smaller piece has a layered roof which acts as a shelter, an umbrella or a canopy and standing underneath it and looking up flying skylarks can be spotted.”
Cherwell and the Kingsmere Community Centre Group will be looking to open the community and youth centres to residents and the wider Bicester community later in the year. These facilities will be joined by a convenience store and local shops, a day nursery and community recycling centre now under construction
The thriving village of Kingsmere also includes a new primary school and secondary school due to open next year. Kingsmere is served by excellent transport connections and the development is home to a selection of house styles which have proved hugely popular for a range of home buyers.

A new £7.5 million dementia specialist care home in Warwick is a step closer, as WCS Care officially marked the start of construction with a ground-breaking ceremony.
The state-of-the-art care home is being built by Deeley Construction and has been designed for the Warwickshire-based charity by Warwick-based architects Robothams. It will replace the former Woodside home on Spinney Hill, which closed for demolition in 2017, as part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment.
Residents, staff, and invited guests – including the Mayor of Warwick, Cllr Stephen Cross, and Cllr Richard Edgington – gathered to celebrate the turning of the first sod at the site, which will become a deluxe village-style experience for 72 older people and people with dementia.
The new home, which is due to open in the summer of 2019, will include family-scale households for up to seven people, with en-suite showers and toilets for everyone.
There will also be a relaxing spa, pamper salon, deluxe cinema, shop, café, and fully-staffed, traditional launderette, as well as table tennis and companion cycling for two – all designed to ensure the people who live there enjoy life as much as possible.
The new home will feature the latest technology that will enhance and integrate into daily life without being intrusive, including circadian rhythm lighting and night-time acoustic monitoring to help ensure a good night’s sleep.
Smart phone apps connected to mobile care monitoring will mean carers spend more time with residents. It’s linked to a Relatives’ Gateway, where people can check and interact with their loved one’s care 24-hours a day, wherever they are.

A Coventry-based construction company has showcased its commitment to developing young people by joining an industry led initiative.
Deeley Construction has joined The 5% Club, which focuses on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.
The 5% Club, initiated by Leo Quinn CEO of Balfour Beatty in 2013, is a movement of more than 275 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers.
Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members are also asked to publicly report their progress in their Annual Report.
Existing members range from SMEs to FTSEs and cover a number of diverse industries, from engineering through to the legal sector.
Deeley Construction has a long-held tradition of growing its own workforce with almost 20 per cent of the company’s staff coming through the firm as an apprentice.
It is a proud record that includes managing director Martin Gallagher, who welcomed three new apprentices to the company in the past year.
Martin said: “The skills shortage in construction is one of the biggest issues facing our industry but here at Deeley Construction we have always seen apprenticeships as a great route to growing our own and the industry’s future workforce.
“I know only too well the benefits of being an apprentice having started my career as one. It gave me the opportunity to work my way up through the business to the point where I am now able to give others the same chance I had.
“It’s great that our new apprentices want to develop a career in construction and also highlights that there are many roles in our sector from being out on-site through to being based in the office.”
Deeley Construction currently supports three management trainees. Two other staff members are undertaking work sponsored learning programmes which accounts for nine per cent of the total workforce.
The company also offers one and two week placements to students from local schools and colleges – giving students a valuable insight into the construction industry.

The latest phase of a successful £9 million development in Kites Park in Princes Risborough is now full after a Midlands property company agreed the final pre-sale to an expanding fabric company.
Following the pre-sale of a 38,555 sq ft office and manufacturing facility to Ilecsys last summer, AC Lloyd has sold purpose-built 26,000 sq ft premises to Curtains & Linens.
The company, which is currently based in Woodham, near Aylesbury, is due to move into their new home in June once the work is completed by Coventry-based Deeley Construction.
Sanjeev Singh Sidhu, the Managing Director at Curtains & Linens which employs nine people, said this was an exciting new era in the business’s history.
“When we first set-up the business in 2008, we had a retail shop in Hounslow but when online shopping really took off, the business grew further and we moved into bigger premises in Aylesbury,” he said.
“We have got to the point of saturation where we can only hold a certain amount of products and we want to take the next step and grow the business again. We want to have more product lines to expand our product range.
“This is a new location for us which is in a pleasant, peaceful area rather than a big industrial estate within a large city or town which we prefer.
“AC Lloyd and Minns-Network Developments, their Development Managers, have helped us every step of the way. Since we are not buying a ready-made unit, it is a little more complicated and we couldn’t have done it without them.”
Mark Edwards, a director at AC Lloyd Holdings, said: “Kites Park has proved popular with a variety of businesses across different sectors, in view of its location and our ability to offer freehold design and build packages.
“Curtains & Linens is moving to their new home in a prime location which will mean the company can continue to process its orders for its existing customers as well as enabling them to expand their product range.

A Coventry construction company has been shortlisted for an industry award for its work at a local school.
Deeley Construction, which is part of the Deeley Group, is a finalist in the Refurbishment Project of the Year award category at the NFB Awards 2018.
The company has been shortlisted for the £5.8 million project it completed on behalf of Warwick School on the former Guy Nelson Hall, which is now known as Warwick Hall.
The new hall has already played host to a range of events and performances and has proved to be a hit with staff, pupils and the local community.
Simon Jones, foundation secretary for Warwick Independent Schools Foundation, said: “Deeley Construction was courteous and flexible in their approach to minimise disruption to the school. We were impressed by Deeley’s willingness to host site visits for pupils, teachers and governors who were eager to view progress.
“The hands-on approach from all of the employees – from site managers to directors – gave a personal touch which all at Warwick School appreciated. The building provides a focal point for our school campus, helping to shape future plans, and we are grateful for such a wonderful building.”
Winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony taking place at The Belfry Hotel & Resort on Tuesday, March 27.

A new £1.4 million speculative industrial development is being created in North Warwickshire.
Coventry-based Deeley Construction has started work on the former Mallard Lodge site in Marsh Lane, Water Orton, on behalf of Flexdart Limited.
Flexdart is a scrap metal merchant, with clients around the world, and is branching out into property development as the business expands.
The firm, which was established in 1957, selected Deeley Construction to undertake the work on the 16,000 sq ft industrial property with a two-storey office, delivery area and car parking.
The site was previously a house known as Mallard Lodge and had historically been used as a workshop for car repairs in the 1940s.
Nic Bevan, of Flexdart, said: “The scrap metal side of the business is expanding. We have a global customer base and are always looking for new opportunities within the trade.
“However we also want to diversify the business and saw this as a great opportunity to develop a property that we could lease out to another company and bring further employment into the area.
“It’s ideally located, close to the M42 and M6 motorways which provide ready access to the rest of the UK mainland and ports, within 15 minutes’ drive of an international container base, train station and airport we believe it will attract significant interest.
“We went out to tender and we were impressed with the plans that Deeley Construction put forward during the interview, particularly how they would ensure the development would cause minimal disruption to the local area and environment. It is important to us and our business to be good neighbours and Deeley shared that ethos.”
Martin Gallagher, the managing director of Deeley Construction, said that speculative industrial development had been rare in recent years but was vital for the regional economy.
He said: “We are delighted to be underway at Water Orton on behalf of Flexdart after being successful in the competitive tender process.
“There is not a huge amount of speculative development being undertaken when it comes to industrial premises but there is certainly a need for it.
“The ability to regenerate a site in this way and work in partnership with our clients is a great strength of Deeley Construction.”

Located on the corner of Birmingham Road and Clopton Road, Fordham House has been awarded Secured by Design (SBD) Gold Standard for security measures incorporated into the design and build of its 82 high-quality apartments.
The development was required to meet SBD standards for physical security such as windows, doors and locks however Fordham House enhanced this with additional crime prevention techniques such as the automated rising bollards for resident parking, a part time caretaker service and privacy blinds for ground and first floor apartments.

Business figures will come together to support the construction of a new home for the 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts.
The inaugural 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts Business Breakfast will take place at Warwick Hall on Friday, January 5.
Running between 7.15am and 9.30am, the free-to-attend event is in support of building a new headquarters for the group in St Nicholas Park, Warwick and its wider ‘Building a Future’ Initiative.
The group needs to raise £650,000 for the construction of a new HQ, which will allow the group to grow, supporting more young people and becoming a valuable resource for the local community.
The event is supported by Deeley Group and Warwick School and will feature a networking session followed by three speeches from leading business figures and individuals with a seafaring connection.
The first speaker on the morning will be Simon Talling-Smith, who is CEO of private travel company, Surf Air in Europe and a former 2nd Warwick Sea Scout. He also masterminded British Airway’s first e-commerce site in 2001.
Alan Haywood, CEO of BP Integrated Supply and Trading, will be the second speaker and is also a former 2nd Warwick Sea Scout. Alan joined BP in 1988 and has held a wide variety of leadership roles in the trading business in Europe and the US for more than 25 years. He will reflect on how 2nd Warwick plays an important role in the development of young people.
They will be joined by former Captain of RMS Queen Mary 2 Captain Bernard Warner.
His career at sea spanned 45 years, serving his final six years as Captain of the largest transatlantic ocean liner built for the British Cunard Line since Queen Elizabeth 2 and retired in 2011.
Janette Eslick, fundraiser for the 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to host our first ever business breakfast and we’re looking forward to welcoming business people from across the region to the event.
“The 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts has been a huge part of Warwick for more than 50 years and we are recognised as one of the best in the country. The new headquarters will enable to us to be available to more youngsters and provide greater support to the local community.
