Business figures will come together to support the construction of a new home for the 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts.
The inaugural 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts Business Breakfast will take place at Warwick Hall on Friday, January 5.
Running between 7.15am and 9.30am, the free-to-attend event is in support of building a new headquarters for the group in St Nicholas Park, Warwick and its wider ‘Building a Future’ Initiative.
The group needs to raise £650,000 for the construction of a new HQ, which will allow the group to grow, supporting more young people and becoming a valuable resource for the local community.
The event is supported by Deeley Group and Warwick School and will feature a networking session followed by three speeches from leading business figures and individuals with a seafaring connection.
The first speaker on the morning will be Simon Talling-Smith, who is CEO of private travel company, Surf Air in Europe and a former 2nd Warwick Sea Scout. He also masterminded British Airway’s first e-commerce site in 2001.
Alan Haywood, CEO of BP Integrated Supply and Trading, will be the second speaker and is also a former 2nd Warwick Sea Scout. Alan joined BP in 1988 and has held a wide variety of leadership roles in the trading business in Europe and the US for more than 25 years. He will reflect on how 2nd Warwick plays an important role in the development of young people.
They will be joined by former Captain of RMS Queen Mary 2 Captain Bernard Warner.
His career at sea spanned 45 years, serving his final six years as Captain of the largest transatlantic ocean liner built for the British Cunard Line since Queen Elizabeth 2 and retired in 2011.
Janette Eslick, fundraiser for the 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to host our first ever business breakfast and we’re looking forward to welcoming business people from across the region to the event.
“The 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts has been a huge part of Warwick for more than 50 years and we are recognised as one of the best in the country. The new headquarters will enable to us to be available to more youngsters and provide greater support to the local community.
“We have some brilliant speakers on the morning, two of which are past members of our group and have gone on to make a real impact in the world of business.
“We’re also delighted to be welcoming Bernard Warner, who I am sure will have some fantastic stories to share from his time at sea and how those experiences on the water have shaped his career.”

An international company based in Warwickshire is doubling the size of its Nuneaton headquarters thanks to recent growth.
Leading health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett International has added a further 48,000 sq ft to its global headquarters at Eliot Park, which is the hub for over 1,500 stores globally.
Coventry-based Deeley Construction, which took the project through the initial design and planning process, has now completed the multi-million pound development and handed over the state-of-the-art building to the company.
Not only are staff now making the most of the extended office space, they are also benefitting from an on-site gym and nursery. The latest works will see the HQ house 500 staff when all positions have been filled.
It’s the latest phase of work that Deeley Group has undertaken at the park in Nuneaton after more than 40 years of regeneration on the site.

A Coventry company has joined forces with Coventry Road Club to stage a charity cycle ride and celebrate two of cycling’s greatest innovators.
The Starley Sportive will recognise the contributions of James Starley and John Kemp Starley to the modern bicycle industry and take on place on Sunday, 18 February, 2018.
Deeley Group have joined up with Coventry Road Club to hold the event, marking Coventry Road Club’s sixth sportive and following on from the successful Deeley 80 Cycle Ride in September 2016.
All money raised on the day with be donated to support Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice.
James Starley is known as the father of the bicycle industry, while John Kemp Starley is widely considered the inventor of the modern bicycle – both worked and lived in Coventry.
The day will feature a choice of two routes to ride from Coventry into the Warwickshire Countryside, with one route 59 miles and the other 30 miles.
The sportive will leave from Deeley Group’s headquarters in Coventry at 9am.
Ian Court, of the Coventry Road Club, said: “The Starley Sportive is the perfect opportunity to kick-start your road season in 2018.
“We wanted to recognise the incredible contribution of James and John Kemp Starley, both of whom were of course based in Coventry, and raise funds for a very worthwhile cause in Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice.
“We’re excited to be working with Deeley Group to put on the sportive and have already received a lot of interest for what should be a brilliant day of cycling.”

It will be Ho Ho Ho all the way up and down the highest mountain in Wales when a group of Coventry and Warwickshire business professionals raise money for a local charity.
Housebuilder AC Lloyd, based at Tachbrook Park in Warwick, challenged their business contacts to join them in taking part in the Santas Rock Snowdon 2017: The highest Christmas Party in the UK.
Deeley Construction and law firm Wright Hassall have accepted the invitation to raise funds for Young People First which helps to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people living in Coventry and Warwickshire.
All three companies have entered two teams and are on course to smash the £5,000 fundraising target set by Young People First.
The walkers will be among a total of 11 teams of five people wearing Santa suits who will leave Pen-Y-Pas at 9.30am on Wednesday, December 13 and will walk the Pyg route with the support of qualified mountain leaders wearing snowmen suits and the charity’s helpers wearing elf suits.
Once at the summit, the group will enjoy the highest Christmas party in the UK before heading down the mountain to arrive back around 5pm.
Edward Hudson, of Deeley Construction, said: “At Deeley Group, we pride ourselves on doing as much as we can to support the community and good causes.
“This is a great challenge for a great cause and we are delighted to be supporting AC Lloyd and other firms from the region in this event.”
Alistair Clark, a director at AC Lloyd, said this would be a fun, festive way to collect funds for a Leamington-based charity.
He said: “We have raised money for Young People First in the past and we also built their headquarters in Westlea Road in Sydenham.
“When we heard about the Santas Rock Snowdon, we thought it would be good fun to walk up Snowdon and we decided to challenge our business contacts to enter teams as well.
“We are delighted Wright Hassall and Deeley Construction have accepted and we are looking forward to seeing who completes the walk in the fastest time and we are also grateful for those who are not taking part but have made a donation.
“We are all going to be dressed up in Santa suits and I am sure it will look quite a sight on Snowdon!”
David Skoppek, of Young People First, said this was the third Santa-type event they had organised and it looked set to collect the most money.
“Last year we raised £2,124 and we wanted to try and more than double that to £5,000 this year,” he said.
“We are on course to achieve that, thanks to the support of AC Lloyd, Wright Hassall and Deeley Construction as well as other teams taking part, which is just incredible.
“I am sure it will be a memorable day because we have organised a Karaoke Christmas party at the top of Snowdon which is different to the usual type of office festive get-together!
“We are really grateful to Alistair at AC Lloyd for being the driving force behind this in urging teams to get involved and we are really looking forward to it.”

Monday 20th November will see the start of the first, annual Coventry & Warwickshire Business Festival fortnight.
In its inaugural year, the Business Festival has already become the largest business event in the region, with a packed programme consisting of 114 events and thousands of attendees expected over the fortnight.

Deeley Construction has won a major award for its commitment to keeping its staff – and members of the public – safe.
The company has been awarded the Building Safety Group’s (BSG) Member of the Year for the Midlands in 2017.
BSG is a not-for-profit organisation and is the UK’s largest construction safety group for health, safety and environmental advice. It has members right across the country and picks out companies from each region that has gone the extra mile when it comes to health and safety.
BSG managing director Paul Kimpton said: “To be eligible for this award, the BSG member must be able to demonstrate that the company has a framework in place which helps to improve safety and health performance on construction projects and covers all stages of a project including planning, design and post construction.
“The overarching objective is to reduce the number of accidents and deaths on construction sites and to improve the ability of the industry as a whole to deliver safer construction projects and equally important, healthier employees.
“When selecting a winning member for each BSG region we have looked for companies that have been able to show evidence of health and safety leadership by communicating its importance to all stakeholders in the company.
“The successful company is also seen to be promoting effective health and safety management at the design stage of a project as well as managing and measuring health & safety risk.
“It is also clear that the company is entrenching best health and safety practice as part of the company’s culture.
“We are delighted to say that Deeley Construction has proved to be an outstanding company when it comes to all of these practices and, therefore, have made them our Midlands Member of the Year.”
Martin Gallagher, managing director of Deeley Construction, said ensuring sites are safe is the company’s number one priority.

A Coventry construction company has continued its commitment to bringing forward the next generation of talent in the industry.
Deeley Construction, which is based at George House at Coventry Business Park, has taken on three new apprentices to assist with the firm’s continued growth.
Charlie Stevens and Matt Byrne are both management trainees with the company and Katie-May Cashmore is a trainee accounts assistant.
Charlie is undertaking a Construction Management Degree at Birmingham City University, while Matt is studying for a BTEC Diploma in Construction Level 3 at South & City College Birmingham. Katie-May is completing an AAT Diploma Level 2 at Coventry College City Campus.
The trio continue a long-held tradition at Deeley Construction of growing its own workforce with almost 20 per cent of the company’s staff coming through the firm as an apprentice.
It’s a proud record that includes managing director Martin Gallagher, who welcomed Charlie, Matt and Katie-May to the company.
Martin said: “The skills shortage in construction is one of the biggest issues facing our industry but here at Deeley Construction we have always seen apprenticeships as a great route to growing our own and the industry’s future workforce.
“I know only too well the benefits of being an apprentice having started my career as one. It gave me the opportunity to work my way up through the business to the point where I am now able to give others the same chance I had.
“It’s great that Charlie, Matt and Katie-May want to develop a career in construction and also highlights that there are many roles in our sector from being out on-site through to being based in the office.
“As a company, we continue to grow and the addition of three new apprentices is a perfect way for us to start looking ahead to 2018.”

A classic West End hit musical will be the first major schools production to be staged at a new hall in Warwick.
Pupils from Warwick School and King’s High School are collaborating in the school edition of one of the world’s most popular musicals, Les Misérables, from Wednesday, November 8 to Saturday, November 11 at 7pm.
It will be the first major schools production held in the new Warwick Hall, which was completed in September 2016 by Deeley Construction.
The new Warwick Hall is a 1,000-seat, £7.5 million state-of-the-art venue which features performing arts studios, exhibition space and improved acoustics.
It replaced the old Guy Nelson Hall and saw more than £1 million raised by the school through dedicated activities to help fund construction.
The musical will feature the hit songs “I Dreamed A Dream”, “Bring Him Home”, “One Day More” and “On My Own”.
The international show has been seen by more than 70 million people worldwide and continues to break box-office records.
Cat Price and Mike Perry will direct the production, with design by Judy Reaves and lighting by Ian Roberts.
Warwick School Upper Sixth student Samuel Young will feature as musical director.
Deeley Construction, which is part of the Deeley Group, are sponsoring the production, in partnership with the Friends of Warwick School.
