  • Over 140 new homes planned for canal-side development

    Plans for a £29 million residential development of over 140 new homes along Leamington Spa’s canal side have taken a step forward.

    Orbit Homes has announced plans to build 143 high-quality homes for sale, shared ownership and affordable rent on a brownfield site at Sydenham Drive.

    With rising house prices and growing demand for homes in Leamington putting homeownership out of the reach of many, the development will provide a range of housing options to help people on to the housing ladder.

    Offering canal-side living, the new development will bring 55 homes to the open market, as well as 39 homes available for shared ownership and 49 for affordable rent.

    Orbit Homes is expected to begin work on the former Soans’ Ford dealership site this month, after completing the land purchase in the first week of March.

    Due for completion in spring 2018, the new homes will be delivered in partnership with Deeley Construction.

    Chris Jones, development director at Orbit Homes, said: “We are incredibly excited to have completed the purchase of the land, and begin to bring to life our plans for this canal-side development.

    “The housing market in Leamington Spa, along with much of the country, means there is a housing shortage, especially at affordable prices. This development will create more housing options and provide quality homes to meet people’s needs and aspirations.”

    As part of the 39,000 home Orbit Group, Orbit Homes is the UK’s third largest developing housing association building around 1,500 homes a year.

  • New £5.8m redevelopment of Pershore College officially opened

    TV gardener David Domoney officially opened the £5.8m redevelopment of Pershore College at a celebratory event with students, staff, local businesses and stakeholders.

    David, who presents ITV’s Love Your Garden, and is a former student of the college, cut the ribbon to officially open the new contemporary glass building which includes a spectacular Collections House, teaching rooms, laboratory, higher education suite and business conference zone as well as a new library area and reception featuring a ‘living wall’.

    Guests were treated to tours of the college, as well as a chance to try the Pershore College range of juices and ciders and the microveg, microleaves and edible flowers the college supplies to the Michelin-starred Fera at Claridge’s.

    The new facility was constructed by Deeley Construction, part of the Deeley Group, and has transformed the college.

    Features of the new building are:

    ● State-of-the-art Collections House where exotic plants can thrive, featuring permanent and seasonal collections. The Collections House is environmentally controlled through a sophisticated electronic management system to control ventilation, humidity, heating and lighting. In addition to protecting and enabling the plants to flourish in a semi-Mediterranean climate, the systems are readily accessible to students as a living demonstration of modern greenhouse technology

    ● STEM centre (science, technology, engineering and maths) and agri-tech lab where students will be able to learn about the newest innovations in the field, such as sustainable horticulture, aquaponics (an enclosed sustainable system where fish and plants grow together without the need for additional chemicals) and the use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in supporting horticulture processes in growing techniques

    ● New higher education suite for students on degree programmes, including animal science, veterinary nursing, horticulture and arboriculture

    ● New library

    ● Conferencing facilities and event space

    Warwickshire College Group Principal and CEO, Angela Joyce, said, “We were absolutely delighted to welcome so many of our staff, students, partners and stakeholders here today to the official opening of our stunning new building. A special thank you must go to David Domoney for his wonderful speech – his perspective as a former student was fascinating and I’m sure he has inspired our current students.

    “Over the last year Pershore College has seen probably the biggest change in its long history with the construction of this spectacular building and a refocusing of our curriculum. We have embarked on a fresh, dynamic journey to meet the demands of our new world and support key national priorities through the delivery of skills, education and training.

    “This building is a visible landmark of this ambition. This investment will give all of our students – whether they are studying animal welfare, veterinary nursing, arboriculture or horticulture – an innovative, technologically-enhanced environment to inspire and give them the skills needed for industry today.”

    Speaking at the event, David Domoney said, “The horticultural industry is phenomenal. It offers a diversity that transcends other industries by the variety of our specialisation. As educated horticulturalists we can become scientists, growers, educators, retailers, artists, designers, architects, landscapers, photographers, broadcasters, writers, pioneers and entrepreneurs. The opportunity to control your destiny from an education here at Pershore College is phenomenal.

    “A career in horticulture is dynamic and varied, exciting and profitable. This building is more than just a highly functional education centre – its dramatic, iconic and spectacular design is a beacon that shines to change the perception of a career in horticulture. And that is why I’m very honoured to be here and be a part of this day.”

    Pershore College offers a range of courses in horticulture, arboriculture, animal welfare, veterinary nursing and more, including apprenticeships, full and part-time courses and degrees.

  • Leading UK Enterprise Zone Completes Phase One

    MIRA Technology Park, the 1.75 million sq. ft. Enterprise Zone in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, has concluded Phase One of its development plan with the completion of key infrastructure at the site.
    Deeley Construction are proud to have worked on this first phase by delivering the first five Technology Park buildings.

    Since work began on the Technology Park in 2010, a total of £53.1m has been invested, and 440 jobs created and safeguarded. To date, a total of 118,000 sq. ft. of R&D space has been created since construction began on the site, which has helped attract some of the world’s largest automotive firms including Bosch, Aston Martin, Sanoh and Lockheed Martin.

    The infrastructure – which represents £7.4 million of investment and includes new roads, roundabouts, 10km of service ducts, 5km of footpaths and cycle ways and a total of 27,000 new trees and shrubs – enables a further 500,000 sq. ft. of construction and paves the way for Phase Two of the development, which includes the East, South and Centre Sectors of the Technology Park site.

    Phase One of the MIRA Technology Park development, which is part of HORIBA MIRA Ltd., has also:

    • Seen a total of five new buildings completed, including a range of bespoke buildings for the likes of European Tier 1 Haldex and iconic British brand, Aston Martin • Seen the number of companies establishing R&D activities on the Park grow to over 30, of these more than 50% are foreign direct investments (FDI) demonstrating the strong international interest • Become one of the leading and most successful Enterprise Zones within the UK • Created 213 man years of construction sector employment to build on-site and off-site infrastructure, including recent building works along the A5 trunk road, and the first five Technology Park buildings

    George Gillespie OBE, CEO at HORIBA MIRA, said: “We are thrilled to announce the completion of Phase One of the development of MIRA Technology Park.     “As part of our long term economic plan, the Midlands economy has the potential to grow by £34 billion by 2030, and by the end of this parliament, there could be as many as 300,000 extra jobs, and the development outlined today will play a key role in helping to deliver this.

    “Completion of Phase One of the Technology Park will help MIRA become an even better place to do business, driving the research and investment that will keep it at the forefront of the automotive industry.

    “Today’s new development demonstrates how, by focussing on innovation, finance and skills and developing world-class infrastructure we can create an environment in which the Midlands will cement its place as an economic engine for the whole nation.”

    Phase Two of the HORIBA MIRA Technology Park development, which includes an additional 500,000 sq. ft. is now underway, with a further three buildings totalling 90,000 sq. ft. expected to commence construction this year.

    It is estimated a further 2,000 high value jobs will be created at MIRA Technology Park by 2025, with a further 3,000 as a consequence in the regional supply chain.

    Property and construction professionals across Coventry and Warwickshire are putting their weight behind the UK City of Culture bid.

    Coventry-based Deeley Group, which has property development and construction divisions, hosted the team behind the city’s bid to become City of Culture in 2021.

    After hearing from steering group chair David Burbidge and bid adviser Andrew Dixon, a gathering of 40 professionals from the sector saw a short, dramatic piece from a group of young people from the Belgrade Theatre.

    Peter Deeley, of the Deeley Group, said: “The city – and the county – needs to be right behind this bid because it could do so much for the area, culturally, socially and economically.

    “We were delighted to host the team and to hear more about what the bid might look like and the real benefits the whole region would feel.

    “The time feels right for Coventry to have the confidence to put its heart and soul into this bid and win the title of UK City of Culture for 2021.”

  • Following in Gary’s footsteps

    The winner of this year’s Neville Award has been praised for his commitment and team work on a variety of projects.

    Deeley Construction presents an annual Neville Award to a member of its workforce in memory of a colleague who died in 2011.

    Gary Neville joined the company as an apprentice before progressing to become contracts manager and leading on some of the firm’s major projects including the development of Belgrade Plaza, in Coventry and St George’s Square, in Bristol.

    He died suddenly in 2011, and the company introduced the award to recognise the employee who has demonstrated the most commitment to their role within the company over the previous year.

    Contracts manager Mike Thompson won the vote from his fellow colleagues this year after handling a number of construction projects, and was presented with the trophy by Deeley Group’s Managing Director Peter Deeley.

    Peter said: “Mike’s unwavering commitment to finishing his projects to the highest standard has been noticed by everybody during the three years he has been here. He has been a real team player focused on delivering results, and has earned respect from everybody at Deeley Construction.”

    Over the past year Mike has been responsible for the delivery of projects at Pershore College, Monarch Gardens in Leamington Spa, Waterloo Housing Group and Bromford Group in North Warwickshire.

    Mike, who lives in Lichfield, added: “I am both delighted and surprised to receive this award, as I haven’t been with the business that long compared to other people. Every construction project has its own unique requirements and I really enjoy the unpredictable nature of my job and the problem solving it brings.

    “One of the most interesting projects we’ve just completed is building a collections house for exotic plants at Pershore College. The plants required a certain temperature and humidity, so we needed to think carefully about the room layout, taking into account things like the positioning of the heating and lighting.”

  • Development of key worker accommodation takes step forward

    Orbit has completed the purchase of a vacant office building, currently known as Warwick House, from Stratford Town Trust for the development of targeted key worker accommodation in the town.

    In the first days of the year, Orbit took possession of the site, which will see the development of 82 high-quality one and two bedroom apartments for private rent, with a focus on local key workers.

    The housing association, with an already strong customer base in Stratford, has plans to demolish the existing office building, on the corner of Birmingham Road and Clopton Road, and transform the site into a brand new residential building. This will bring targeted key worker accommodation for the likes of health and emergency services workers and teachers in the town, as well as those working in local businesses.

    The new building will provide 82 private rented homes, comprising 64 one bedroom and 18 two bedroom apartments designed to help minimise maintenance requirements, to be let on assured short-hold tenancies.

    Stratford Town Trust will continue to retain the freehold, whilst Orbit will own and manage the new accommodation. A partnership between Stratford Town Trust, Orbit, ABD Developments LLP (owned by the Bird Group, the Henley Estate Company, and Deeley Properties) and Robothams architects will bring the scheme to market. Deeley Construction has been appointed as the design and build contractors.

    Work has now begun on the demolition process, with the site due for completion in summer 2017.

    Adam Cooper, private rented sector director at Orbit, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Stratford Town Trust, ABD Developments and Deeley Construction to take this project forward, and bring much needed key worker homes to Stratford.

    “This is a key development for Orbit, as it demonstrates our commitment to providing more homes across new and different tenures to meet the needs and aspirations of our customers.

    “With the rising cost of homeownership pushing many out of the housing market, we have seen a huge rise in the demand for rented properties. Our new high-quality homes will offer local people a flexible housing option, in a great location.”

    Helen Munro, chief executive of Stratford Town Trust, said: “This is a really ground-breaking concept and one we are so pleased to support. It is absolutely right that those working hard in our hospitals and schools can afford to live in Stratford. We are confident this development will have a positive impact throughout the town.”

    David Austin, of ABD Developments, said: “There is an intrinsic need for more key worker accommodation in Stratford, to allow for the people who work in its hospitals, schools and emergency services to live in the town. I am sure this development will prove to be extremely popular.”
